Levels of Pleasure, Love and Fear

In his famous presentation "5 Levels of Pleasure", Rav Noach Weinberg (of blessed memory), puts into perspective all the pleasures of the world, clearly showing us how to travel the journey of our lives in the 1st class. We take a road from the most basic, physical pleasures, to the more subtle and sophisticated ones- Love, being Good, Creativity and finally, Closeness to G-d! (In case you'd like to read the whole article, here's the link-http://www.aish.com/sp/f/48965946.html )
It certainly makes alot of sense in our narcissistic age to address this pleasure-seeking world with this powerful message of the REAL pleasure that is here for us.
BUT HERE'S MY PROBLEM-
As we present this well-written and beautifully explained idea to the world as "Jewish approach" (in fact, this is the classical Aish presentation, part of their Discovery seminar), we are making the following statement- Judaism agrees with pleasure-seeking as the way of life. Which it does not, imho!
The choices we make in this paradigm are based on resolving the following conflict- Pleasure versus Comfort. Some would put it as follows- all choices that we make in life are based on either our desire for pleasure or an attempt to avoid pain. (This is how I overheard it presented today by one of the lecturers not related to Aish) . In my opinion, BOTH PLEASURE AND COMFORT ARE SECONDARY IN THE JEWISH PERSPECTIVE.
In fact, pleasure-seeking ideology of the past- Epicureanism- was seen by the Sages as the main opposition to the Torah approach. Pleasure-seeking is materialistic, egotistic, and it DOES NOT CONCERN ITSELF with the most fundamental question of MEANING. Pleasure as the meaning of Life is a very shallow answer, indeed! (And in fact, that's why in 5 Levels you can't get higher than 4th without hitting meaning- to transcend Love one needs to have an IDEAL HE IS WILLING TO DIE FOR! You're welcome to look inside!)
SO, WHAT'S THE REAL CHOICE WE MAKE, FROM JEWISH PERSPECTIVE?
Torah tells us- it's CHOOSING TOV (Good) or RA (Evil). [And again, it's very difficult to associate Good with Pleasure and Evil with Pain- this effectively means becoming an Epicurean!]
Now, we need to be able to DISTINGUISH between Good and Evil. How do we know which is which? Let's try to establish a clear way to do it!
Classical definition of Good- that which makes you close to G-d, as G-d is the ONLY source of Good. Evil therefore, is the opposite- that, which makes you further away from G-d.
First distinction- as you are about to make a choice, ask yourself-
Is this going to bring me closer to G-d?
PROBLEM- well, we all know, how easily we are DECEITED by our own rationalisations- they can take us all the way from Good to Evil- with our best intentions, of course!
As the Prophet portrays to us this most common picture of human self-righteousness-
Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! (Isaiah, 5:20-21)
We are commanded to follow the Path of G-d,and this mitzvah is interpreted as doing Hesed. Hesed, or LOVE, thus, is seen as the main attribute of G-d and Good. On the mystical Tree of Life it corresponds to sefirah of Hesed and represents the Right Side of the Tree. The Left Side is represented by the opposite energy of Gevurah. Gevurah is the strict Judgement of G-d, and if it is separated , cut off from the Tree, it represents Evil. If Good is seen and experienced as Love, Evil is the opposite energy- that of Fear.
And indeed, we find in contemporary Trans-Personal psychology vast information on Fear as  the main source of self-imposed suffering and our unwillingness to grow spiritually. As we can see, both Love and Fear are experienced on emotional and physical level- positive/negative emotions, and bodily sensations [For example- take a note of the different breathing people have when they are calm or anxious respectively. Emotional state of Tranquility is accompanied by deep, calm and rythmic breathing, and Anxiety is associated with shallow, fast and arythmic one.] Thus, we are ready to formulate another approach-
Good/Evil distinction based on Love/Fear as emotional and physiological experience.
As opposed to logical questioning, which implies our objectivity and fails ("Man is close to himself"- and therefore not objective, by definition)- this time we propose very subjective feeling criteria- if mind tricks us into rationalising, our body cannot be tricked! It will accurately reveal to us what this particular choice means- Fear or Love!
Fear-based choices are coming from Ego- it's primier interest being survival and egocentrism, these are our main obstacles on the way to spiritual growth!
Love motivates us to step out of our self-imposed limitations, grow and learn, using every challenge as an opportunity!
Next time when you're facing dilemma, try to approach it as a Love/Fear question- and look at your emotions and bodily sensations, as you are checking the options.
Ask yourself- Does this choice come from Love? Does it come from Fear?
Be aware of your feelings and physical sensations- which of them are Love-based and which are Fear-based?

Big Picture of Judaism- the beginning

In my previous post, the issue was just posited and formulated. WE NEED TO REDISCOVER THE BIG PICTURE OF JUDAISM.
Here is my first attempt to point out a few very important sources, and hopefully to develop a sense of contemporary understanding, which will be AUTHENTIC at the same time-in the spirit of  the Torah and our Oral tradition.
Sources
1). Mitzvot as a SYSTEM
a) We have an amazing attempt in the Talmud (Makkot 24a) to view all the huge body of the mitzvot as a UNIFIED SYSTEM, with an UNDELYING PRINCIPLE, stated in the Prophets- "Righteous shall live by his Faith". Of course, this needs to be understood- WHAT IS FAITH (EMUNAH)?
But as we say, "She'elat Khakham Khetzi Tshuva"- good (wise) question is already half-an-answer- and beginning of a research!
b) Famous statement of Rabbi Akiva- "love your neighbour as yourself is a GREAT PRINCIPLE of the Torah"-seems to point in a similar direction- since we are presented with a Mitzva, and not just an "idea"-
Love is presented as an underlying principle of the Law

2). Core principals as META-Ideas of the Torah
Maybe less famous but certainly not less important- statement of Ben Azzai,  who apparently is arguing with the previously-mentioned R. Akiva, suggesting even more important CORE PRINCIPLE- based on a quotation from the Torah- "This is the Book of the Geneology of Adam- on the day that G-d created Man, he made him in the likeness of G-d"
Here we encounter a totaly new idea- ALL of the Torah is seen as the Book of Geneology of Man- i.e-
Torah (as the Law,  the system of mitzvot) is there to SERVE this Man, where mitzvot are TOOLS and INSTRUMENTS for Adam to FULFILL HIS POTENTIAL, based on his G-dliness- in other words (contrary to the opinion of many)- Mitzvot are Means to accomplish the End- REALISATION of      G-DLIKE NATURE OF MAN AND HUMANITY!
And here we approach another very important point- Judaism as the WORLD RELIGION
has to be more than system of Mitzvot given specifically to the Jews- it has to have it's UNIVERSAL MISSION STATEMENT
And if I'm not mistaken, following the reading of this Ben Azzai, it clearly gives us one-
REALISE YOUR G-dlike Potential as Adam- person, nation and humanity!

To be continued

The Big Picture of Judaism

As I said before, I'm truly convinced that we're living at the most interesting time in history. As things around us are changing with accelerting speed (well, think about internet- noone knew what it is just in mid 90-es! )-It's first time in human history that we have free access to almost unlimited resourses of knowledge!  And we are yet to see this huge quantity of new information to translate into quality!
New tendency of globalisation and networking on all levels finally brings home the great vision of all the esoteric teachings of  the ancients- World as One big Organism, where everything is interconnected, interrelated and interdependant! On Kabbalistic terms, this superstructure of the world is called Adam Kadmon.
And HERE COMES THE CHALLENGE- as modern science helps us to develop stronger understanding of the physical structure of the world, Modern religion has to give us clear and contemporary understanding of it's metaphysical structure!
In case of Judaism, that gave the world monotheism and through it's affiliates (I mean Christianity and Islam) introduced some very important concepts that shaped our society (such as Hesed-Loving Kindness, Justice, Equality in front of the Law, etc)- it seems, today we are in desperate need to address the challenge of post-Modernity and to rediscover the Big Picture of Judaism.
If you require some examples, there's a couple of them
1). Web yeshiva launched a new online discussion on "the Mission of the Orthodoxy". Although the topic clearly suggests the parameters of discussion- it's specifically addressing Torah-observant Jews that call themselves Orthodox- it already stirred some heated discussion- "what is it that makes us who we are"
If you're interested, you can follow this discussion here-
http://blog.webyeshiva.org/orthodoxy/the-mission-opf-orthodoxy-special-message/

2). More general question, addressing the issue from a broader perspective- something like "What is the Big Picture of  Judaism" is posted on Machanaim website (Russian) in a new article written by Pinchas Polonsky
http://docs.google.com/View?id=dcjbfrwk_193d3hk3fgv

I think, it shows very important understanding of a REAL NEED- after hundreds of years of nitpicking and "specialisation", we are finally lost in this huge amount of data on the number of the trees, their details and various characteristics... BUT WHERE IS THE FOREST? What is the Big Picture of Judaism?

Here in this post, i just wanted to give you some "food for thought"...
This topic will be continued in my next posts

The Second Face of G-d

As I feel that my previous post was both very long and at the same time not explicit enough, I would like to continue discussing the same topic- G-d as the Heavenly father or the Great Other. G-d in second face, so familiar to us from the pages of the TANACH. As you saw, many feel today that this outdated image doesn't belong to our sophisticated world. In my previous post, I introduced you to both sides of the argument- first, we sampled one of the presentations of "G-d is not a person" theory, and then we sampled some fascinating ideas from the Integrated theory- claiming that we require all three perspectives of G-d, corresponding to our three faces (I, THOU and IT). Then we specifically emphasised the importance of the second face perspective- G-d as the Great Other is the most essential vision for our society!
I'm convinced, this argument (made by Andrew Cohen in his Enlighten Next Magazine) deserves to be explained and elucidated, as it goes SO MUCH AGAINST THE CURRENT OF POST MODERNIST EGOCENTRIC THINKING!
And here's what I found very important in this article
  The Postmodern Predicament
Cohen: I think this applies particularly to our generation and our generation’s children who have grown up in the Western world in the last half-century. For many years I have been saying that the postmodern narcissistic separate self-sense is the most fundamental obstacle to higher development. Many people thought that I basically didn’t get it, that this was an outmoded way of looking at things. But you only really discover what an enormous problem the narcissistic self-contraction is in relationship to how profound your interest is in transcending it. If you have no interest in transcending it, it doesn’t seem to be a big problem. But if you authentically want to try to get on the other side of it, you discover that it’s actually quite significant.
This is a delicate subject because the postmodern variation of the ego is, on one hand, a great gift of the evolutionary process, but on the other hand, it’s a significant obstacle. In a positive sense, our ego, our capacity for individuality, is what makes it possible to become an integrally informed, evolutionarily enlightened human being. The more profound our individuation, the more powerfully Spirit can shine through us. So being profoundly individuated is not a bad thing. It’s a gift of evolution, a gift of God, if you want to put it in theological terms. It’s just that our narcissistic identification with the separate self, outside of any higher context, creates a big problem. The ego begins to see itself as the center of the universe, and the whole process inverts upon itself. Everything turns upside down.
Wilber:   Philosophers are finally realizing that postmodernism as a philosophy has come to a dead end. For a couple of decades, you and I and others who have been working mightily to undercut this postmodern stance have often been accused of being out of touch, attacked for not really understanding it. In fact, I rather fully understand it. I’ve written books on it! And the fact is, there is a downside to it, and most people don’t get that downside. The downside is that if nobody can say what is truth, then nobody can correct my egoic disposition. There is simply nothing that’s going to let me grow, that’s going to help me get over myself, that’s going to point to a higher, truer, or more valuable stance than whatever I just happen to hold by whim. And this has been a problem in philosophy, in sociology, and in spirituality. Our educational system was redone according to this kind of relativistic “nobody can tell me what to do, because I’m perfect the way I am” mentality. And tests now show that the generation graduating from college is the most narcissistic generation ever tested.

Cohen: I know. So we’re at a very interesting point in the evolution of culture. On one hand, Spirit has the capacity to shine through us in ways that may be unprecedented because of how highly integrated and sophisticated our individuated self-sense has become. But the big problem is that our awareness has gotten stuck on and overidentified with this separate self and lost in its own separate world of extreme narcissism. The reason this is so tragic is that it makes it impossible for us to participate in life in the deepest and most profound way. To make a cultural revolution happen—which is something I’m passionately interested in and you are obviously deeply committed to as well—awareness has to be liberated from narcissistic self-fixation so it can overflow and discover who it really is as the Ground of Being and as the evolutionary impulse. So we can all begin to participate in the life process in ways that will completely change the leading edge of culture.
And now comes this very important point of studying G-d in the second face- G-d the Great Other!
Ken Wilber claims the following- as we got stuck in our quite primitive understanding of this idea, this in turn does not allow our spiritual progress!
To quote him verbatim-
So we don’t learn about this dimension of Spirit in our educational system, and we drastically missed the chance to have our larger cultural backgrounds of religion and education give us a head start on ego-transcendence. Even with the influx of Eastern traditions, people were attracted to third-person and first-person expressions of Spirit. They didn’t go for second person because they didn’t want to fundamentally submit. And they didn’t know how; they didn’t have role models for it.
 CONCLUSION-
1). Second Face of G-d is essential in our spiritual growth- we need to learn how to submit our ego to Him
2). Current mode of thinking does not see how this is relevant- primiraly because we don't have an adequate presentation of this Second Face in our post modernist context
3). We URGENTLY need to work in this direction!
I would add the following- HERE WE HAVE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO REDISCOVER OUR JUDAIC WISDOM AND TO REVEAL IT TO THE WORLD IN THE MOST PRACTICAL SENSE!
As we all know, Judeo-Christian tradition strongly emphasises G-d as the Heavenly Father. This image is not particularly known in the East- HENCE, IT'S OUR UNIQUE MISSION TO BRING CONTEMPORARY UNDERSTANDING OF THIS MOST IMPORTANT CONCEPT - to ourselves and to the world!

Something or Someone?

I think, we truly live in the most amazing time in history!
Unusual and unprecedented access to information through internet, as well as our progress in science and general education, makes some of the "hidden knowledge"of the past available to all of us!
For instance, how many people  would be interested in discussing the Nature of G-d, let's say, even when this was seen as the most important philosophical question? All those treatises were written by few philosophers, and "common people" were absolutely unaware of the matter- and it certainly wasn't practical in any sense.
Now, WATCH THIS-
As self-help psychology becomes more spiritual, it actually BRINGS FRESH PERSPECTIVE to these deepest question human been can ask! And as I was reading one of these free online brochures (10 steps to Divine Connection by Rebecca Smith)- I realised HOW WONDERFUL THIS IS!
Truly, we can witness the prophecies of the Zohar are coming alive- wells of Wisdom, including the innermost esoteric Wisdom, BECOME PART OF OUR DAILY LIFE!
And here's what's been discussed in the brochure- G-d as a PERSON versus G-d as NOT A PERSON
And here's the argument (get ready for a long quote! Highlighting is mine, to stress the point)
If you’re anything like most people, you’ve been exposed to a variety of ideas about what God is and isn’t. And no matter how adamant you may be about the idea that God is not a person or even a person‐like being, we live in a world where God is usually personified, and almost always personified as a father.
Personifying the Divine makes God a lot smaller than God is.

We experience people as flawed and parents as inconsistent and whether we know it or not, holding an image of God as a father—or even a person‐like being—keeps us from having an authentic experience of Divine Connection.

I believe that Step One in cultivating your Divine Connection is to retrain yourself to experience God as something (rather than someone) that is everywhere—filling every bit of space and time simultaneously.

In fact, God may just very well be every bit of space and time simultaneously. If we are all One, perhaps God is the very system of connectivity though which runs the love that binds us all into one loving being.

If the majority of your thoughts about the nature of God have personified God as a human‐like being, I invite you now to let God be bigger than that. Try on the notion that God is the limitless space between the beings (sentient and otherwise) that flows through everything for the sheer joy of the experience.
And then try on the notion that God is each and every being (sentient and otherwise) at the same time.
In a belief system in which God is this infinitely big, an experience of “Godness” is infinitely available to us
Now, let's bless the desire of so many people today to RECONNECT to G-d...It seems, like we are entering a new Era of G-d - Man communication!
And yes indeed, this primitive thinking of "father with the beard" caused so many people to dismiss the whole concept of G-d - in that sense, this NEW UNDERSTANDING is most welcomed!
And it's pretty clear, that one can find NUMEROUS EXAMPLES of the validity of such understanding of G-d's nature- especially in our mystical sources. For instance G-d as MAKOM- the Place of Everything, or Ein Sof of the Kabbalists- the Ultimate Reality- is certainly indicating this kind of vision.
At the same time, as you are reading the quoted source- you will probably feel the same as I did- HOW ABOUT ALL THOSE MANY EXAMPLES IN THE TANACH?
It goes without saying, G-d as "The Heavenly Father" is the most common and familiar image for all of us, who knows the Scriptures.
AND HERE COMES THE QUESTION- IS THIS IMAGE SIMPLY NOT RELEVANT TO US ANYMORE?
Instead of giving you my own answer, I will point out to you the most unusual and thoughtful article,
that appeared in 'Enlighten Next' Magazine- called "The Second Face of G-d"
I would strongly recommend to read it-
 http://www.enlightennext.org/magazine/j45/guru-pandit.asp

Here's my very brief review-
Ken Wilber speaks about what he called the three faces of God- he articulated and put into a simple framework the different dimensions of the Divine : God as the great all-knowing Other, God as the entire cosmic Process, and God as our deepest Self. And he connects these three very different expressions of Spirit to the three fundamental perspectives that integral theory is built upon: first person, second person, and third person, or I, You/We, and It.
Spirit, or God, can be looked at through all of these perspectives, which (as Ken often points out) correspond to the perspectives found in all major languages. “First-person Spirit,” Ken explains, “is the great I AM, the pure radical subjectivity or witness in every sentient being. Spirit in second person is the great Thou, something that is immeasurably greater than you could ever possibly be in your wildest imagination, something before which surrender and devotion and submission and gratitude are the only appropriate responses. And Spirit in third person is the great web of life, the Great Perfection of everything that is arising.”
Now comes the most fascinating part- here's the quote
If we want to develop spiritually, we need both an intellectual or philosophical framework and an experiential grasp of what many of these very profound spiritual concepts mean. And what could be more empowering or inspiring for a sincere spiritual aspirant than learning to make these distinctions and then beginning to discover the actual manifestations of these different dimensions of Spirit within his or her own self?
Finally, the part that is MOST RELEVANT to our discussion here- WHAT ABOUT G-D AS THE FATHER, G-D IN SECOND PERSON? IS HE STILL RELEVANT TO US?
And that's what the author, Andrew Cohen, has to say in this regard
For this issue’s Guru & Pandit dialogue, I chose a section that focuses on the second face, God as the great Other, because as I explain in the pages that follow, I’m convinced that while all three faces are important, this one in particular is essential for our time and culture and is all too often dismissed.

So HOW IS THIS HEAVENLY FATHER, OR THE GREAT OTHER, IS SO RELEVANT TO US?
And here comes the answer
Especially for those of us who have grown up in postmodern Western culture, the second face of God is absolutely essential. Without God as Thou becoming a living, felt dimension of our own experience of Spirit, without that great Other before whom we must ultimately submit, I wonder if it’s possible for us to move beyond ego and our culturally conditioned tendency toward extreme narcissism in any kind of authentic way...
Spirit in second person is an extremely important dimension because it is spirituality in its relational form, its intersubjective form. When Martin Buber spoke about the I-Thou relationship, he was talking about God in second person. Awakening to this face of Spirit means being in dialogue with God, in direct communication with God, face-to-face with the Creator of everything that’s arising moment to moment. It’s Spirit in a form that can be communicated with.

Jacob or Israel?

This Shabbat, we continued reading the life story of Jacob-
And as we already saw, this was a story of constant conflicts, much sorrow and many challenges...thus, Jacob is known to us as a Patriarch of Galut- his life symbolically represents "Jew in Exile"-under constant fear of attack, dependant on external factors for his very survival, weak and unable to rely on himself...This is how we were seen for generations by all the Esaus of the past, who came to humiliate us in so many ways, knowing that we will not be able to defend ourselves.
Yet, Jacob remains faithful to his G-d and his great mission that he believes in despite all the miseries- "I don't deserve all the kindness and all the truth that You have done to your servant"- he pleas to Hashem- reminding his G-d- "And you had said-'I will surely do good with you and I will make your offspring like the sand of the sea which is too numerous to count'...Esau is approaching, with 400 armed men ready to wipe out this Jacob who only has his family with him- Esau remembers how this Jacob took away his birthright, and then stole his blessing...Jacob the cheater, "cheap Jew"! How often do we come across this picture- Jews are perceived as smart and cunny and are using all their talent to manipulate the world and to control it- Elders of Zion are still on the minds of so many as we are "the mafia of the world"! And of course, we have all the right to dismiss this claim as ridiculous and antisemitic...But let's try to look at it from a different perspective- "noblesse oblige"-as they say- NOBILITY OBLIGATES- and we are the Chosen people, we claim to be on a high moral plain, we have a MISSION to become the Light onto the nations, and bring Mashiach to the World...So, here comes Esau and his complain is all of a sudden so REAL- "Is THAT how you become blessed- by CHEATING?"
We left Jacob as he is about to face his brother...but before he will see physical Esau, he is yet to struggle with his spiritual Master- this mysterious Man, that struggles with Jacob in the middle of the night...And gives Jacob a blessing-
"Your name shall not be called Jacob, BUT ISRAEL- for you have striven with the Divine and with men and have overcome"
This change of name, we must note, somehow resolves the issue- after receiving the blessing, Jacob is embraced by Esau, kissed by him, and this hatred seems to be forgotten...Esau offers his brother to follow him, Jacob politely refuses...and the Medrash is telling us- he will come "to judge the mount of Esau" in the future...
What's the significance of this change of name, and why is it not changed ENTIRELY (as was the case with Avraham, who once was known as Avram)-we still remember Jacob by his old, Galut name...
It seems, Galut is not willing to depart so easily, it's mark is quite real, and we are still living by it's standarts- Jacob would not change overnight, and his decendants will have to struggle many a night, to finally see the Light of Mashiach! Jacob is the Patriarch of Galut- and in Galut you need to act "under circumstances", sometimes cutting corners here and there, not being quite honest and truthful...You accept the norms of society that is run by Esau, and you are dependant on his mercy...At some point this hopeless and pitiful image of a Jew in Galut will become so loathsome to his very own sons, so that many of them will leave the House of Judaism, looking for the proud image of Freedom and Justice under the banners of Communism or secular Zionism- only to see how futile were their promises, some generations later...Jacob can't be redeemed in it's anthisesis- Esau is not going to cure us from Galut, but he URGES us to BECOME ISRAEL! His angel is here to tell us-
FREE YOURSELVES FROM YOUR SELF-IMPOSED LIMITATIONS, you don't need to steal your blessings anymore - EARN THEM HONESTLY, as you deserve it!
I think, this question of our IDENTITY is the most important one to be asked in our most crucial period of history- DO WE ACT AS ISRAEL? DO WE ACKNOWLEDGE OUR BIRTHRIGHT AS A HUGE RESPONSIBILITY- TO OURSELVES AND TO THE WHOLE WORLD?

New Age of Enlightenment?

It seems, more and more people today are "awakening to their Life's purpose",to quote the title of a famous book by E. Tolle.
And here's another example- huge number of "spiritual evolution" websites that were launched recently, new books on the market that become bestsellers- and Etkhart Tolle is just one example of this pretty new phenomena of our Age...Is this a new Age of Enlightenment?
This question was asked in the survey on one of the most interesting sites dedicated to Spiritual awakening- Evolution Ezine- here's the question and the result-
Do you feel that you are becoming more aware that we have entered the age of enlightenment? And are you sharing this with any friends? (2 Answers required)
Absolutely I am aware that we are in the Age of Enlightenment (85.0%, 2,760 Votes)I love sharing this knowledge with friends (48.0%, 1,547 Votes)I have tried to share with some friends but no one gets it (24.0%, 760 Votes)I am aware but would rather not try to wake others up (4.0%, 126 Votes)No, this age is no different than any other (3.0%, 105 Votes)There's nothing to share (2.0%, 60 Votes)Total Voters: 3,233

Well, of course you expect the majority of those visiting the site to be MORE open to the idea, than the general public...And yet, I still find these results quite IMPRESSIVE!
WE ALL NEED TO GET READY for some serious, maybe dramatic changes in the world around us! Being more aware of ourselves as SOULS with UNLIMITED POTENTIAL is the first, most important step, it seems!

Living with Faith

It seems, Judaism today is searching for it's foundation-many voices can be heard that we need clear "mission statement", or general formulation of our most fundamental principles.
Certain confusion when it comes to the "big picture" of Judaism can in fact be seen as something POSITIVE. Simple AWARENESS of that lack of clarity and the urge to SEE THE BIG PICTURE are very healthy signs of the new soul-searching and quest for intellectual honesty, that are so important and even critical for our spiritual health!
Now, more to the point- coming across some of the discussions on the topic (both in English and in Russian), I've got surprised to see that these discussions fail to quote the most OBVIOUS SOURCE- which is TOTALLY RELIABLE, and seems to indicate the CORE idea, or maybe even single UNIFYING PRINCIPLE of our tradition- that of EMUNAH (Faith)-
This is direct quotation from the Talmud (Makkot 24a)
"Habbakuk came and erected them (all of the mitzvot) on one- "Tzaddik shall live by his Faith" ( Habbakuk 2:4)
It seems to reveal to us the MOST IMPORTANT KEY TO JUDAISM...and yet, to my knowledge, so few had spoken about it...Rav Nachman of Breslav was the one who dedicated his whole life to this teaching- and it seems, his writings and ideas are experiencing real Revival these days- another clear sign, that this is very much in tune with the need of our generation and resonates with our Zeitgeist ("Spirit of the time").
BUT WHAT IS FAITH? AND HOW ARE WE TO APPROACH IT PRACTICALLY?
R. Nachman doesn't address this question directly, maybe because it seemed to obvious, or possibly, such "logical", theoretical approach to the very foundation of religious Life would seem very unnatural and foreign to his style...
Yet it seems, we DO need to come to some very PRACTICAL, and SIMPLE UNDERSTANDING of FAITH...The word is so heavily used in our texts and is so familiar to many of us, it seems it simply LOST it's FRESHNESS, and every time something happens we can hear "You should have faith"... which sometimes means- don't bother thinking, at other occasions- be like everyone else , or- just do it!
But surely, we are not expected to abandon our HIGHEST IDEAL, and simply follow this uninspiring mediocrity!
WE NEED TO LIVE OUR FAITH<>
It seems strange that this most basic axiom of Judaism needs to be reiterated- it can only mean one thing- OUR MOST IMPORTANT CHALLENGE IS TO REESTABLISH this FAITH, discovering even deeper meaning in our Life, and in Faith itself!

Ladder or tower?

In this week Torah portion, we're presented with one of the most magnificent images of the Torah, that constantly inspires me- the Jacob's Ladder.
Jacob is fleeing away from his brother's anger, leaving behind the Land and his family, facing the unknown in the darkness of the night. SYMBOLICALLY, says Kdushas ha Levi, it's us, his descendants, going into Exile, with no certain future in front of us, no earned income to rely on-past is left behind and future lies in the darkness...
It's at this moment of despair that Jacob is shown this most amazing image- his famous Ladder, Stairway to Heaven (I hope, you remember the song). It STAYS FIRMLY on earth, and REACHES HEAVEN, and angels of G-d are ascending and descending on it...Take a note of the order- FIRST, ascending, and only then going back down...But aren't they suppposed to come from Heaven? Truly, angels don't dwell on earth! So, what's going on?
Another striking parallel- we have yet another image in the Torah, where Heaven and earth are connected- but the message seems to be the opposite to that of the Ladder.
In the early days of humanity, when they just recovered from the Flood, people are concerned with their survival in face of G-d's anger- and they decide to build the Tower- to reach the Heaven- to "make name"for themselves...Their motivation is FEAR, their action is clearly Ego-based- and, we are told in the midrash, the whole purpose of this huge building project is to make sure NO DIVINE INTERFERENCE will become possible. That is- to cut earth from Heaven, to overpower Heaven (Spirit) by brutal force of the "might is right".
Yet, this reference to "it's head reaching Heaven" in both cases certainly needs to be addressed.
And it seems, Torah is clearly presenting two distinct paths here- one of the Tower, and one of the Ladder. The Tower is been built with ENERMOUS EFFORTS of all of the people who take part in the project- human being becomes totally insignificant, as Midrash tells us, less significant than the brick! Man is only DOER, his value is only temporary, but the BRICK WILL STAY FOREVER! The Tower will stay as the eternal image of the human Glory, burying underneath all the Gulags of various pharaohs and stalins...And that's the irony of the pyramids and masoleums-they are laughting at their masters, whose bones are trying to escape decay- brick is still GREATER! It doesn't need enbalming! If you are building the Tower of Glory, you are destined to fall from it- you will toil all your life for the lures of "making name", only to see that you are worth less than the brick it's been built of! What a DISGRACE to the REAL GLORY of MAN- created in the image of G-d, born to be FREE and GREAT!
But the real Glory is NOT that of the Ego- and it doesn't require HUGE EFORTS and much ACTION to ACCOMPLISH tremendous RESULTS-all this is your Ego talking- "let us build the Tower, let us make name to ourselves!". And no matter how many times you hear these voices coming from society you live in, trying to persuade you that THERE'S NO ALTERNATIVE to this ancient curse- "By the sweat of your brow shall you eat bread"- Go, build the Tower! Get the bricks- more, more bricks- we are told- that's what we all NEED to DO, that's what EVERYONE is DOING...No matter how much of this stuff is part of your world, you still have this CHOICE- the one between the Tower and the Ladder.
And yes, the Ladder is SIMPLY THERE- nothing to DO, nothing to build, just BE there, open your eyes and see it - right in front of you. And the angels are ASCENDING- because it's you who create them- through your good deeds, positive speech and thoughts! That's how you REALLY change the world- and stop the madness of the idolotrous worship of the Tower!
Excercise
When you are confused, disempowered, distressed- take a deep breath, breathe in naturally through your nose, and breathe out with a long breath through your mouth- after you calmed down, imagine the Ladder of Jacob in front of you- see how you are sending those angels (can imagine light, if you wish)- going up and then coming down to you, as the Light of Blessing!
Notice how your mood changed. Say thank you to G-d and your Higher Self!

Explore a New World

Here's the practical idea based on my previous post-
Imagine, you're confronted with something that appears to you stupid/inadequate/unreasonable...And as you're about to make that negative comment (and you know, it will cause chain-reaction of all the bad stuff on both sides, as is always the case)- just notice how you feel at the moment- take a DEEP BREATH- and MENTALY IMAGINE yourself being a WHOLE WORLD- (if the World is too much for you, imagine a planet- you've got the idea)- than, take a deep breath again, and APPLY the SAME IMAGE to ANOTHER PERSON ( with whom you're about to start an argument )- now, see yourself as an austronaut, who is landing on a differnt planet- you're about to learn something really exciting!
Don't miss the chance!
If for whatever reason, the situation escalated before you even had a chance to think of all these great things, notice where you're holding- it's never too late!
You can still do it even AFTER the argument- good training for the next time!

Separate realities

The following is taken from a modern-day classic of self-help,
"Don't Sweat the small stuff"by Richard Carlson- with my comments, of course!
If you have travelled to foreign countries, you are aware of vast differences between cultures.
The principle of separate realities says that the difference among individuals is every bit as vast. Just as we wouldn't expect people of different cultures to see or do things as we would (in fact, we'd be dissapointed if they did), this principle tells us that the individual differences in our ways of seeing the world prohibit this as well! It's not a matter of merely TOLERATING differences but of truly UNDERSTANDING and HONOURING the fact that it literally can't be any other way.
When we EXPECT to see things differently, when we take it as a given that others will do things differently and react differently to the same stimuli, the COMPASSION we hhave for ourselves and for others rises dramatically.
As we can see, this simple idea can potentially ELIMINATE MOST(or even ALL!) CONFLICTS FROM OUR LIFE!
Jewish perspective- I think, this is incredibly powerful way of approaching Life from Jewish perspective- with "Ayin Tova"-Good Eye- and judging others favourably.
Usually judging favourably is understood as simply resisting the urge to make some negative comment, and "pushing" yourself to find something good in that "bad guy". Here we are given an amazing tool how to accomplish it NATURALLY- BE AN EXPLORER OF LIFE, GIVE A CREDIT TO HASHEM- FOR HE CREATED SO MUCH DIVERSITY IN THIS WORLD!
Each human being is a WHOLE WORLD- thus, a Separate Reality- HONOUR that!
Here we need to appreciate our UNIQUENESS- which is at the core of Talmudic thinking-
"These and those are the words of Living G-d".

To be or not to be

This week we read in the Torah about an unusual encounter between the two brothers, who seem so much alien to each other- Esau and Jacob...twin brothers, I should say- and yet- separated from the womb, to take different paths in life...
"Two nations are in your womb, and two regimes from your inside shall be separated, the might shall pass from one regime to the other, and the elder shall serve the younger." (Bereshit,25:23)
Our Sages took this prophecy of the Torah and applied it to their time- ours is the last exile, that of Esau/Edom, Rome and later Christian Europe are the spiritual decendants of Esau called Edom (Red )- modern day West is their direct heir. Esau the Red knows of this world only, hence his materialism and lack of concern with "irrelevant" spiritual values-
"I'm GOING TO DIE, of what use to me is the birthright?"- he sells his spiritual priviledge for a lentil stew, with no apparent regret- "Jacob gave Esau a lentil stew, and he ate and drank, got up and left"- Torah's usage of 4 verbs in a row clearly indicates swiftness of action, no questions asked, no concerns on Esau's part...Esau is a typical westerner, he is the DOER- he conquers this world with ACTION! He DOES things, and he seems to be in total control of his world...later in life though, comes the regret- where's my father's blessing? And, by the way-where's my birthright? WE all act like esaus in this insane "world of Action"- till at some point in life comes the regret and the bitter question- "Where's my birthright?"
But what's the alternative- you can ask- we all need to work, make our living, and yes- it takes efforts and time...but why is it that our enlightened progressive world, that gives us all the benefits of industrial revolution, and we're the most prosperous people- at least financially-in the history of civilisation- why is this world BETRAYING US SO MUCH? Why are we SO LONELY?
Why do we feel that vacuum, that 'hole in place of G-d', as Sartre puts it- why?
There MUST be alternative-and we need to look no further than Jacob, of course- yes, the younger brother, who sits in the tents, and is described as "Ish Tam"- a WHOLESOME Man-
he seems to be not interested in this mad rally, this constant struggle for survival- and he CHOOSES not to be part of it...His is the path of freedom- the path of Life- and he reveals to us a deep secret- besides DOING, there's BEING! And you don't need to do anything in particular to BE yourself- just BE it! Create that space in yourself, and feel yourself as part of the WHOLE- part of the Great Being of G-d! And it's for that reason that the 4-letter name of G-d means just that-BEING! To experience yourself connected you need to shift your perspective-from DOING to BEING!
And of course, you will continue to do all the necessary things- this world is the World of Action-
you will be acting in this world, but you wouldn't belong to it- you wouldn't invest all your time, efforts and talents to bring yourself as a sacrifice to it's idolatrous nature, which only wants more and more, and gives you back nothing but "vexation of the spirit". You will be like Jacob- who was WHOLESOME in this state of BEING!
And that's the real meaning of the question- TO BE OR NOT TO BE.
Quite literally-NOT to be means DEATH, and that's what happens to all the matter- it seizes to exist, and Esau knows it well- thus he says- I AM GOING TO DIE
Reclaiming our spiritual Birthright- "You are sons to Your G-d"- is the other option- that of LIFE- because spirit never dies, never seizes to exist-it's connected to it's Eternal core- the Great BEING!

Choose Life!

Life and death I put in front of you- proclaims Torah- and you should choose Life...
Strange words, if we take them literally...for years I was really struggling to understand their meaning...But those things that we REALLY struggle to understand- questions that REALLY bother us- one day, when we finally receive the answers, these become OUR BLOOD, OUR VERY OWN FLESH!
So, Torah is telling us- this CHOICE is in front of you...EVERY MOMENT, it seems...you can live your life as DEAD, or-ALIVE, for a change- your choice...
Ok, then, what's the defenition of DEATH? Static, no movement, habitual...hot, very hot- finally-
DEATH is being on AUTOMAT, same things every day, same routine- NO thinking, NO real attention to what's going on- inside you and in the world around...
What is life then? The opposite, of course- very ACUTE sense of AWARENESS of EVERY MOMENT- LIVING in the moment, being PRESENT, awake and full of zest for Life!
Next time you're taking familiar route from your house to the subway station (or to your car)-
PAY ATTENTION, notice those little things around you- notice how everything is FULL OF LIFE-especially in nature! Feel the Divine in every tree, every leaf - and you will feel great sense of AWE, you will suddenly feel how much this world is indeed SACRED- and G-d is here with you- RIGHT NOW!

Fear not, Jacob

I'm reading a very good brochure on how to deal with fear...it's also available online on freefromfear.com. It has various techniques-22 total!- to help you deal with your various fears.
But you may think- "great, what this has to do with me? I'm not a chicken, let those who have nothing better to do waist their time for such rubbish"...If you think, fear is not part of your daily life experience- think better, I urge you!
Consider the following line taken from this brochure-"Fear RUNS MUCH OF THE WORLD, spurring on endless activity.Fear of enemies,of old age, death, or rejection, and a multitude of social fears are the basic motivators in most people's lives" . this is famous David Hawkins, from his book "Power vrs Force". And if you still feel- "So what's wrong with that? That's quite normal, I guess- especially if it's so common"-here's the GOOD NEWS-
ONE CAN CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE TO TRANSFORM HIS PERSONAL LIFE, stepping out of the low vibrations of fear and with that HELPING TO RAISE THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF MANKIND!!!
How so? Well, D. Hawkins explains in his book, that as a result of series of experiments, that were conducted over a 20 year period, using a variety of Kinesiology tests and examinations, the following was established (I'm bringing only the most essential info here)
-Collective Consciousness- experiments reveakl that there is a Higher Power, connecting everything and everyone
- Everything calibrates at certain levels, from weak/ low to high, including animals, plants, inanimate objects.
- Hawkins calibrates people's emotions from levels 20 up to 1000. All levels(vibration levels) below 200 are said to be EMOTIONALLY DRAINING., and BELOW INTEGRITY.
These vary from Shame(20), Guilt(30), Grief(75), Fear(100), Desire (125), Anger (150) and up to Pride(175). People feel positively when they reach Pride, however, it feels good ONLY in CONTRAST to lower levels! Pride is defensive and vulnerable, because it's DEPENDENT upon EXTERNAL CONDITIONS, without which it can suddently turn back into lower levels.
NOW, WATCH THIS - it's VERY IMPORTANT!!!
-85% of humanity calibrates below the critical level of 200.
-The overall average level of human consciousness stands at 207.
Human consciousness was steadily below 200 for many centuries(at around 190 the average)-
BEFORE IT SUDDENLY ROSE UP to it's present level in the mid 80-s.
And if you ask me- hold on, but 85% are below 200- so how we get that over-200 average?
HERE'S THE ANSWER-
THE POWER OF THE FEW INDIVIDUALS AT THE TOP COUNTERBALANCES THE WEAKNESS OF THE MASSES!
-1 individual at level 300 (willingness) counterbalances 90,000 humans below 200
-1 individual at level 500 (Love) counterbalances 750,000(!) humans below 200
-1 individual at level 700 (Higher states of Consciousness, like Prophecy, Enlightenment, etc)-
counterbalances 7 million (!!!) individuals with vibrations below 200
In other words, WE CAN REALLY EFFECT THIS WORLD IN A VERY SIGNIFICANT WAY!
In my next post, I will try to address this question from more Judaic perspective

Time to weep and time to laugh

In this age of great speeds and global communication over the internet, we are all short on time...especially when it comes to genuine human feelings. It seems like very soon we are going to substitute love poems and romance with text messages...Something like ILU- which means Ï LOVE YOU- which once was presented with a serenade, or a nice piece of poetry...if you still remember those days, lol
But I honestly think- this is the main reason why we feel so inadequate and so alienated- from the world, from ourselves and from each other.
And the ONLY way for us to recover from this numbness, I believe, is by simply RECOGNISING it- as our Sages used to put it, "Wise question is half an answer".
In our case, this AWARENESS means simply trying to be alert to your very own FEELINGS-and so to the FEELINGS of others around you- just another way how we can make our life so much more meaningful, avoiding those shallow interactions ("how-are-you-great" type-of thing) and having real soul-conversations instead...
Disclaimer- Life may become much more dangerous and painful- but it certainly will become more meaningful and exciting!

What's in the box?

A simple technique that can help you to face life's challenges with a SMILE!
Think of how often you have PROBLEMS in life- and sometimes, you really have very serious ones, that cause you a lot of discomfort, draw your energy, make you feel anxious, angry, frustrated, fearful- you name it!
ASK yourself a simple QUESTION- what kind of emotion you feel when you hear the word PROBLEM? Yeah, exactly- all those mentioned- fear, anxiety, frustration...
THINK- How does it effect you? Does all this heavy load of negative emotions, that surrounds you immediately when you have "problem"on your mind- does it HELP you or rather DISTRACTS you?
And if it distracts you, and even more so -DISEMPOWERS you-i.e- does NOT allow you to deal with a situation with all your talents and strengths-
THEN-obviously- YOU NEED A DIFFERENT STRATEGY!
Now, let's travel in time, and go back to your past, when you knew nothing of those PROBLEMS- childhood was the time when everything was so bright and colourful, full of Life, and you were so energetic and PASSIONATE to discover it's beauty- EVERY given moment!
Do you remember how it felt to receive a PRESENT- imagine yourself a little child, who is just about to get one! You can see that box right in front of you, and your heart is beating with that sweet expectation of something wonderful and amazing- that is JUST ABOUT TO HAPPEN!
Close your eyes, and be fully present there!
Make this experience ALIVE- with all your sences involved!
Now, with this wonderful feeling of wonder and excitement, let me take you back to your REAL LIFE- and let's think of your PROBLEMS as OPPORTUNITIES- opprtunities to LEARN who you are better, to DISCOVER and UNDERSTANd life better, to GROW spiritually and emotionally...all these things are REAL, my friend!
In fact, that's precisely true according to Baal Shem Tov, the founding father of the Hassidic movement- he used to say- life is a mirror, in which you can see yourself...
Now, next time when you are confronted with a real problem- think of it as an OPPORTUNITY!
And, if you're adventurous and CREATIVE enough, close your eyes, and imagine that BOX in front of you- the very same box, you saw years ago, given to you as a gift...Life is sending you another gift THIS VERY MOMENT! Something NEW is just about to reveal itself...Get READY!
